Nairobi City Council

WELCOME MESSAGES

Message by H.E. President Mwai Kibaki

I wish to welcome all the mayors, local authorities elected leaders, hon. ministers and distinguished delegates participating in the 4th Summit of Africities. My government and the people of Kenya are delighted to be the host of this great summit for the promotion and development of African cities.
We have hosted this great event because we believe that peaceful, clean and efficient cities attract business and investments. They also serve as a good habitat for the huge populations whose lives are intertwined with the socio-economic dynamics of these cities.
My government is committed to reforming the local authorities so that they are adequately empowered to carry out their mandate. Obviously, local authorities are best suited to deal with local issues which are critical to the development and well-being of the people living in and visiting them.
The summit provides the necessary environment for sharing of experiences and knowledge in the management of cities in Africa. We all look forward to learning from each other and adopting resolutions to guide us in the management of our respective cities. We also need to inspire each other by building a sense of competition among our cities.
In addition to welcoming you to this Pan African dialogue, I also wish to invite you to tour and enjoy our capital city Nairobi, meet the friendly people of the city, and vist our countryside to learn more about our country and our people.

Message by the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Musikari Kombo

Hon. Musikari KomboIt is my pleasure and privilege to welcome all the participants to the 4th Africities Summit which will be held in the City of Nairobi from 18th to 24th September 2006. This event provides a platform of political dialogue on decentralization, exchange of experiences and best practices in Africa.
As a host nation we believe that the summit will chart out the best way forward on the state of local governments in Africa and their role in local level development and the implementation of the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals.
Karibu Nairobi, Kenya - Bienvenue!

Message by the co-ordinator of Africities 4 Summit Prof. Jossy S. Materu

This is the Fourth Africities Summit to be held since the first one was held in Abidjan in 1998.
The theme of this summit focuses on one of the development challenges of our time: achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and the role that local stakeholders and their partners have to play in this endeavour.
We expect all local stakeholder groups and their partners to come and share their knowledge and experience on how to accomplish this momentous task.
